ABOUT
The Prosodic Body is an area of research begun by choreographer, Daria Fain and architect/poet, Robert Kocik. This research explores language as a vibratory medium that interrelates art, health, and social change.
Prosody is the sound of language. Prosody is the communicative, musical aspect of language as distinct from the literal meaning of the words (intonation, pause, cadence, pitch.) Prosody is all that language communicates which the words don’t literally say (the unsaid, implied, tacit, suggested).
HOW WE WORK
We are constantly collaborating with practitioners from a wide-array of disciplines—notably: composers, linguists, actors, psychoacousticians, poets, neurologists, voice instructors, integrative doctors, bodyworkers, cognitive scientists, dancers, molecular biologists.
We are educative—organizing conferences, classes, workshops, lectures, interviews, demonstrations, expositions.
We perform. The Prosodic Body regularly presents its findings as art events (our term for this is ‘performable research’). These events are sometimes recognizable choreographies, poetry readings, art exhibitions, architectures, and sometimes unrecognizable as such
We publish and disseminate--books, pamphlets, brochures, program notes, web-alerts and newsletters. We also have a growing archive of many hundreds of key texts and documents that pertain to integrative prosody—all of which are regularly made available to the public (the reading room or momentary library is one of our ‘proper’ manifestations).
The Prosodic Body channels information from a panoply of practices in order to make of itself a vital offering. The Prosodic Body situates itself in the long and illustrious history of the regenerative arts—beginning with the Yellow Emperor and running through Gilgamesh, Taoist internal alchemy, the Desert Fathers, Carl Jung, and up to present-day genetics.
We are rigorously nondual. As syncretists, we undo various divides—the divide between art and science, refined and popular art, pure and applied, exoteric and esoteric, vibratory and visible, individual and social benefit, practical and impassioned, inner experience and environment (to name but a few).
